The Local Food Source Guide was created for the Palo Alto food shed – but is appropriate for the entire Mid-Peninsula … just change your mileage slightly.
Points to Ponder
Become a Conscious Food Citizen by pondering these points before purchasing your food.
Think about the terms “local” and “organic”, small farm vs. large agribusiness (organic or not), viable farmer economics, treatment of farm workers, distribution of food $’s, government policies, and more.
- What are the boundaries of my local food shed? Do they change based on the product I’m looking for (e.g. olive oil vs. vegetables).
- Is the product grown locally?
- Is the product processed locally?
- What if the product is processed locally but grown somewhere else?
- Is the product organic?
- Is part of the product organic?
- Is the product certified organic? Or, have I spoken with the farmer and learned about his organic practices? (As of 2002, the Federal Government owns the word “organic”. A farmer cannot use the word “organic” unless he/she has official organic certification. So, a farm can use organic methods but not be certified.)
- How are the farm workers treated?
- Is the farmer making a viable income with the price point?
- What portion of my $ is going directly to the farmer/producer vs. a distributor
